Key Largo sits at the northern gateway of the Florida Keys, with quick access to the Gulf Stream — the powerful ocean current that brings warm, blue water and world-class offshore fishing right to the doorstep. The drop from the reef to deep water happens fast here, meaning less travel time and more time fishing.

Captain Mike runs Key Largo fishing charters targeting mahi mahi, sailfish, blackfin tuna, kingfish, and wahoo offshore. Depending on the season and conditions, trips may use trolling, kite fishing, or live bait techniques — or a combination of all three. The M&M is rigged and ready for serious offshore action.

And when conditions line up, there's a shot at a blue marlin. Out here marlin fishing is pure sport — hook one and it's the fight of a lifetime.

Mahi Mahi

Summer (Peak)

One of the most popular catches in the Florida Keys. Found around floating debris and weed lines in blue water. Known for spectacular aerial fights and excellent table fare. Peak season is spring through fall.

Sailfish

Winter (Peak)

Key Largo sits in the heart of prime sailfish territory. Known for explosive jumps and aerial acrobatics when hooked. Most productive on kite fishing rigs with live pilchards or goggle-eyes. Peak season is winter.

Blackfin Tuna

Year-Round

A signature South Florida catch — sushi-grade eating from football-size schoolies up to 30-plus pounds. In spring they feed along the reef line over wrecks and structure; in the warmer months they stack up on the offshore humps in 500 to 1,000 feet of water, where trolling, live bait, and vertical jigging all produce. They school, so one hooked fish usually means more nearby.

Wahoo

Fall–Winter (Peak)

One of the fastest fish in the ocean — right underneath a sailfish — with explosive strikes and blistering runs. Peak season runs October through December on high-speed trolling and live bait; in summer they hold around floating debris and turn up while mahi fishing. Among the best eating fish anywhere: seared, poke bowls, or blackened wahoo tacos.

Kingfish & Mackerel

Winter–Spring

A winter-into-spring fishery off Key Largo. Live baiting is the top producer, along with slow-trolling deep-diving lures — much like targeting wahoo at a slower pace. Hard strikes, screaming first runs, and very good eating.

Blue Marlin

Sport Fishing

The pinnacle of offshore sport fishing. Blue marlin move through the deep water beyond the reef and around the offshore humps — they are never a guarantee, but the M&M is rigged for the chance, and hooking one is the fight of a lifetime.

How We Fish

Deep Sea Fishing Techniques

Kite Fishing

One of the most effective techniques for targeting pelagic fish like sailfish, tunas, wahoos, and mackerels in the Florida Keys. A specialized fishing kite suspends live baits just below the surface, keeping the bait splashing naturally — an irresistible presentation for predatory fish. The M&M is fully equipped for kite fishing with years of experience running kite trips out of Key Largo.

Trolling

Trolling with lures and rigged baits covers ground quickly and is effective for mahi mahi, tuna, and wahoo. Captain Mike runs proven trolling spread patterns in the Gulf Stream and along color changes off Key Largo.

Live Bait Fishing

The M&M carries three onboard live wells and sources fresh live bait daily — typically pilchards, goggle-eyes, and threadfin herring. Live bait is the most natural and effective presentation for sailfish, kingfish, and mahi mahi.

High-Speed Trolling & Jigging

Wintertime wahoo call for high-speed trolling — lures pulled fast enough to trigger the fastest fish in the ocean. Over the humps, slow-pitch and vertical jigging put artificial baits right in the tuna zone at depth. Two specialized approaches, both dialed in on the M&M.

The Grounds

Where We Fish: The Gulf Stream & the Humps

Offshore trips out of Key Largo don't waste time running. The reef edge gives way to deep blue water fast, and the Gulf Stream sweeps in close — many mornings start with a troll on the way out, picking up bonito and blackfin and loading the wells before the day's main program even begins.

Further out sit the humps — underwater seamounts off Islamorada and Marathon rising through 500 to 1,000 feet of water. Current piles bait up against them, and the predators follow: blackfin tuna stacked deep, mahi pushing through, wahoo on the edges, and every so often a blue marlin. Trolling, live baiting, and vertical jigging all get their turn depending on what the fish want that day.

The rhythm changes with the calendar. Winter brings sailfish, peak wahoo, and kingfish. Spring puts blackfin on the reef line — with bluefin giants passing through in February and March. Summer means mahi mahi in force, tuna on the humps, and wahoo holding under floating debris. There is no off-season offshore in the Florida Keys.

Premium Experience

Swordfish Charters — Day & Night

M and M Fishing Charters is one of the few operations in Key Largo equipped for both daytime and nighttime swordfish trips. Broadbill swordfish are found roughly 20 miles offshore in deep water — often 1,000 to 1,800 feet down in the Gulf Stream.

The M&M carries specialized electric reels and heavy tackle purpose-built for deep-dropping. Captain Mike has landed swordfish exceeding 500 pounds. South Florida is a year-round swordfish fishery, with some of the best action in the country.

What to Expect on Your Trip

Everything Included

All tackle, rods, reels, bait, ice, and fishing licenses are included. Just show up ready to fish. Fish cleaning is available at the dock after your trip.

Trip Lengths

Half day (4 hrs), three-quarter day (6 hrs), and full day (8 hrs) trips available. Longer trips reach deeper blue water and provide more fishing time.

Group Size

The M&M accommodates up to 6 anglers. Rates are based on up to 4 people — $200 per person for the 5th and 6th angler. Private charters only — no party boat here. You'll have the boat and Captain Mike to yourselves.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, food and drinks, and a valid ID. No fishing license needed — Captain Mike's charter license covers all passengers. Reef-safe sunscreen appreciated.
